History

The Australian Kelpy dog breed comes from Australia, sorry for the obvious and tautology. This happened when black collies were brought to the continent in the mid 19th century and crossed with different dogs and, according to some reports, even with the Dingo, which is indicated by some external similarities (although genome studies were conducted in 2019 and found that there were no wild dingoes in the breed).

What came out of these crossbreeds exceeded breeders' expectations and they needed a dog that could participate in grazing, and in the Australian hot climate. In fact, it cannot be said that breeders were professional breeders. This claim is also supported by the fact that the first individual (female) was sold in 1872 by a Scottish man named George Robertson to Jack Gleason. And the dog's name was just Kelpy, which later became the name of the whole breed.

Kelpy is the name of the spirit of water from Scottish mythology. As you can understand, both of these men were settlers. A dog named Kelpy did not already look like a traditional black collie at that time and later changed even more due to crossing, which was obviously free and little controlled. Although, targeted crossbreeding also took place.

One way or another, over time, a breed standard emerged that had a huge amount of energy, could withstand the harsh climate of Australia and could stay in the sun for as long as you wanted, with outstanding endurance.

Later, the Kelpy breed became popular far beyond Australia. In the USA, for example, these dogs are highly regarded in the hot states for their outstanding innate herding qualities and in Sweden, they are used for rescue work. There are now two varieties of Kelpy - showcase and worker. The first one is bred with an emphasis on appearance for performances at exhibitions, and the second one is used for grazing. These dogs are also called the Australian Shepherd dog.

Description

The Kelpy dog breed was bred in Australia. Compared to other breeds, an Australian dog has some genetic differences: it has a large viewing angle. This makes it a great shepherd, as it achieves maximum concentration when watching a grazing herd. The dog weighs up to 19 kg with a height of 49 cm and the dog weighs between 15 and 22 kg with a height of 52 cm. The average life expectancy of the animal does not exceed 14 years.

The head of kelp is proportional, medium in size, with the skull slightly rounded and with a clear transition to the muzzle. The nose is small and its color depends on the color of the dog's coat. This breed has medium size almond-shaped expressive eyes. Vertical ears are widely spaced. The animal has strong and even teeth.

Kelpy's torso is muscular, lumbar is strong and breasts are deep. Legs are straight and parallel, paws have a round shape with large pads and powerful claws. The tail of the dog is slightly bent, its length is small but reaches a jumping joint. As for the coat, it has a very dense structure, stiff and short, so it doesn't get wet. The color of a kelpy can vary and the colors most commonly found in nature are the following:

black;

red;

smoky with a blue tint;

finger color;

chocolate.

Character

Character The animal is friendly and curious. Australian kelpy likes to work, but they also swim and run very well. Dogs can run for miles in the heat. In their home country, they are trusted to lead the herd without control from a shepherd. Due to their kind nature, these dogs listen to their owner without question and treat the rest of the family well. They can be left alone with their older children. Together they will frolic in the open air. Kelpy is good with cats if both pets grew up together.

Temperament

Australian kelpy is a very independent dog. And while emotional contact with the host is important to him, he can handle the herd 24 hours a day without human help, either alone or with other dogs. Obviously, these are very intelligent animals with a high level of social intelligence. And although they are very sensitive and can be watchmen, their low level of aggression and size do not allow them to be considered as full-fledged guard dogs.

Kelpy is a good companion, but not for a family with small children. The fact is that kelpy control sheep by biting and tingling them. And they can apply these techniques to small children as well, considering them to be lambs chased from the herd. However, this behavior is rather dictated by an instinctive habit and can be corrected as there is no aggression in it.
