BREED HISTORY
The birthplace of the Munchkin cats is the United States. One day in 1983 in the state of Louisiana, a woman named Sandra found a small cat with inconceivably short legs in the street and felt sorry for the unhappy creature, who had such a hard time in life. The mistress gave her found a name and was very broken that her heavy cat childhood and hungry life disfigured such a glorious belly.
Short-haired cat was loved, fed, and found her a good husband with normal legs. What was the hostess's surprise when the cat brought the same as herself, shorthanded kittens. In other words, our cat was not a frostbite, but a carrier of natural mutation! In short, only a few years passed, and the wonderful breed of short cats was officially recognized all over the world in 1991. The work on improving the standard is still in progress. In 2001, the shortbread finally appeared in Russia. The first copy arrived here from South Africa, later representatives of the breed were brought from catteries in the USA.
Approximately half of kittens in the Munchkin breed are born with normal legs, but they retain their belonging to the breed and can participate in the breeding - as they retain the munchkin defining gene. Although, of course, the most desirable munchkins are short. The munchkin breed was named after the little men who appeared in the book about the magic country of Oz. Munchkins are excellent, intelligent and easy to handle cats. Funny short-breasted munchkins quickly learn in new conditions, get along with people thanks to friendliness and curiosity.
Short Munchkins can be of any color. The matter is that short cats are still crossed with ordinary cats of different breeds. That's why absolutely all colors from black and chocolate to cream and white can be found among munchkins. At the same time, they can be both long-haired and short-haired.
The character of these cats is calm and soft. These lovely creatures will melt the heart of any man. One look on their face and a landmark figure make them want to hug and hold a kitten. Munchkins are not aggressive at all, they find common ground with puppies, big dogs, rabbits, even birds and small rodents.
They love children, calmly react to their fun, allow you to drag yourself around the apartment, play like a doll. Short cat will never scratch or hurt a child, its tender nature will not allow it. Curiously, the munchkin doesn't stand on its hind legs like other cats, but sits tightly on its hips, using its tail as a support to keep it in balance. Their little legs hanging along the body complete the kangaroo image. Despite their light disposition, intelligence and livability with other pets, short cats are able to stand up for themselves and give a decent fight to the offender. These cats are imperturbable and devoid of any aggression. But they will never allow to offend themselves in collision with cats in the yard.
Despite their short legs, munchkins are not passive animals. They do not jump as high as their long-legged congeries. But short legs do not prevent the munchkins to be nimble, and jump on chairs, sofas and beds, and from there on the furniture higher. Because of their short paws, munchkins aren't prone to hunting, so they're not adapted to outdoor life (although you may well hatch your cat on a harness). Otherwise, he's an exceptionally curious cat who will amuse his owner with his games. One of Munchkins' favorite pastimes is to drag and hide a small thing in a secluded corner. That's why munchkins are known as "petty thieves." If you lose any trinkets, do not panic, but rather follow your pet. Sooner or later, he'll be sure to lead you to his "stash".
Munchkins are clean, not capricious, not demanding to eat, they are extremely patient, stubbornly tolerate any children's games with them. In general, this breed is well suited to those who get a cat for the first time, and is not ready to radically change their daily routine because of the need to take care of the cat.
