10 tips to protect your pet from the heat
10 tips to refresh your pet
When temperatures rise, it's not just us who suffer from the heat: animals are sensitive to it too. To protect them and make sure their health is not endangered, here are our tips for keeping them cool.
1- Avoid walks in the heat
There's nothing like taking a walk to help your pet get some exercise! But choose your niche well: go out at the coolest hours (early morning or evening) so as not to weaken your pet. Don't forget to walk in the shade and avoid concrete: the temperature of the asphalt can reach 122 °F on the ground, so your dog's paw pads can be seriously burned.
In general, during a heat wave, avoid unnecessary exercise: no jogging in the middle of a heat wave!
2- Fitting out your house

To insulate your home as well as possible and keep it cool, remember to close your shutters and turn on a fan. You can turn on the air conditioning, but only if it is moderate. Otherwise, it can cause breathing problems. Another little tip: Leave rooms with tiled floors open: your animals will naturally go to sleep on them.
3- Points of freshness
To allow your pet to refresh itself, the trick is to install a damp towel on a clothesline: your pet will naturally come to stand under this damp microclimate! You can also leave wet towels near his basket or wrap ice packs in a towel.
4- Water at will!
Like us, animals need to hydrate! It is recommended to opt for a water fountain. Water fountains that constantly offer filtered, fresh water will encourage your pet to drink. Otherwise, make sure to regularly fill their water bowl with fresh, but not ice-cold water, as this would cause thermal shock! To encourage your cat to drink, flavoring the water in his bowl with the juice of a can of tuna.
5- The extremities in a cool place!
Dogs and cats have difficulty evacuating heat. You can therefore lower their body temperature by cooling their heads and paws first.
How can you do this?
Apply a wet washcloth on their head or on their entire coat for cats. After a walk, a dog will also like to have its paw pads cooled, so you can soak compresses with water and apply them to their pads. Immediate effect guaranteed! If your pet is not too shy, a spray will also do the trick. If your cat is shy, spray the mister on your hand and then apply it to her coat.
6- A well-ventilated coat
7- A bath and then comes back
If you have the possibility, do not hesitate to take your dog near a water point (lake, spring, beach, private swimming pool...) where dogs are tolerated. Dogs will also have a great time if you wet them with a simple garden hose.
8- A re-hydrating bowl
As you may have noticed, dog and cat food is dry and therefore dehydrated. They tend to make your pet thirsty, which is compensated by drinking plenty of water. In the event of a heat wave, you can avoid making your pet unnecessarily thirsty by wetting its kibble! You can also add water-rich foods such as zucchini, cucumbers or carrots. If you wish, you can also offer your pet home-made ice cream that you can make yourself.
For cats, it is recommended to give them more pâté ( pate ) in cans or bags in the summer. For those who do not have health problems, you can also give them cat milk in addition to water.
9- Get in the car!
During the trip, place a damp towel on your pet's carrier. Don't abuse the air conditioning: it's too cold and causes respiratory problems, rhinitis or even ear infections. Pay particular attention to young animals and older animals, which are more sensitive to temperature variations.
Finally, don't leave your pet locked in the car. An animal can die in a few minutes in a car left in full sunlight. In fact, the temperature in the passenger compartment can reach and exceed 104°F in less than 10 minutes and be fatal for the animal trapped inside.
10- Heat stroke: the right reflexes
If your pet gasps, has red eyes and is breathing very fast?
He gets heatstroke. It must then be cooled as quickly as possible to avoid cerebral oedema. Wrap your pet's body in a damp towel and then consult a veterinarian in an emergency.
