Hygiene and daily care for his pet
Dogs and cats
It is renewed especially in early spring and autumn by the action of hormones, gluticorticoids that inhibit its growth and thyroid hormones that stimulate it. The skin of dogs and cats has a different pH than that of humans, which makes it intolerant to our shampoos.
It therefore requires specific care because human shampoos are too acidic for animals. This can lead to irritation or dryness.
To optimize the beneficial effects of the shampoo, it is recommended to leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing. Make sure that the coat is dry before walking, especially in winter as the animal could catch cold.
In dogs, the grooming will depend on their breed, coat, texture, colour and coat. The frequency of washing depends on the environment in which your pet lives. But in any case, the benefits of proper and regular hygiene are many. Remember also that hair captures pollution.
The cat grooms itself, so it can be bathed less often than a dog. Does he have dull or dusty hair? Does he scratch often or does he have an unpleasant smell? So, it's probably time to go to the bath, it's a matter of hygiene for him, as it is for you.
Regular brushing of your animals not only ensures a beautiful shiny coat and a pleasant time, but also limits hair loss and swarming in your home and on your clothes.
Eye care
Your pet's eyes require special daily attention.
In small animals, tear ducts are easily blocked. This causes tears to run out at the corner of the eyes, which is noticed by a coloration of the hair there.
Feel free to discuss this with your veterinarian to discuss the best way to clean your pet's eyes.
Eye cleaning removes impurities, secretions, dust and reduces irritation caused by rubbing the hair on the eye (long-haired animals). There are eyewash solutions available to avoid these inconveniences.
Eye cleaning can also enhance the effectiveness of an anti-conjunctivitis treatment, for example.
The ears
Most ear problems in dogs and cats are fungal infections. Regular cleaning helps to prevent them. If the eardrum is not injured, an ear milk can simply be applied to clean the ear canal.
A few antiseptic drops will help to fight against possible ear infections. In dogs, they can appear outside the duct but can quickly become internal if not treated.
Ears are delicate organs, especially in dogs and especially if they are drooping.
Cleaning the ear also prevents the accumulation of earwax that causes unpleasant odours. Using a cotton swab, but limiting yourself to the area around the ear, gently clean the pavilion. Be careful not to enter the duct!
The teeth
It is advisable to have your dog or cat's oral cavity checked once a year. This makes it possible to detect teething or gum problems such as tartar build-up, tooth loosening...
Your veterinarian will then be able to advise you on the appropriate treatment.
Be careful with self-medication.
- Paracetamol is to be avoided because even in small quantities it can be fatal in dogs and especially cats (methemoglobin secretion).
- Also avoid aspirin, it is prescribed only in very small doses in vascular care use.
The case of chocolate
It is considered a poison to our animals because it contains theobromine, an alkaloid that the dog does not know how to metabolize.
4 bars of dark chocolate (30g/kg) can already be fatal for a small dog weighing 3 kilos.
Symptoms usually appear after 4 or 5 hours:
Agitation or convulsions.
At the digestive level, diarrhea, vomiting, salivation or staining black stool.
A visit to the vet is often necessary. It will then cause your pet to vomit or provide gastric lavage. Treatment of symptoms is also possible (diuretic, infusion ...).
The danger of essential oils
More and more present in our homes, they are not without risks for our four-legged friends. Even if their origins are natural, they remain very concentrated in active substances and can thus cause irritations or diffusion in the nervous system of the animal.
The most common symptoms are: respiratory or digestive disorders, vomiting, hypersalivation and nervousness, tremors or loss of balance.
