cat diseases (2)

How can you prevent them and manage your cat when he is affected?

Feline asthma

Like humans, cats can suffer from asthma, a bronchopulmonary disease. Asthma is often caused by one or more allergies and there is no cure.

Asthma in cats is believed to have its origin in allergies, as in humans. This disease causes sudden breathing difficulties. Allergen suppression is rarely possible, but your cat's asthma can be very well controlled over the long term.

Symptoms of feline asthma

WHAT IS CAT ASTHMA?
As with humans, cat asthma causes breathing difficulties of varying intensity. These are due to a contraction of the smooth muscles of the bronchi, resulting in a reduction in the diameter of the bronchi. Seizures can be very strong. Asthma is usually due to an allergic problem. Pollens, dust, dust mites, parasites or cigarette smoke can be the allergens responsible. Your cat can be affected at any age, but asthma is most common in young adults or middle-aged cats. Siamese people would have a predisposition to this disease.

ASTHMA SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of cat asthma are quite similar to those observed in humans. Your cat has trouble breathing, is holding her mouth open, her neck stretched, her inspiration is forced and wheezing while the exhalation is brief. Often your cat will cough from a dry cough, small and straight cough. These cough episodes can occur a few days before the seizure. Asthma can lead to decreased activity and loss of appetite.

Diagnosis of asthma

The diagnosis is essentially clinical. Your veterinarian may perform a chest X-ray to establish an inventory of his respiratory tract but there is no characteristic image of asthma. He can offer you a dose to guide his diagnosis and bronchoalveolar or AML lavage is also possible. This involves injecting physiological fluid into the trench under anesthesia and endoscopy to recover mucus from your cat's bronchi. This procedure gives indications of the type of inflammation. Your veterinarian will try to exclude other causes of cough, as the clinical examination may be completely normal.

Treatment of asthma in cats

Asthma cannot be cured, but it is possible to limit the allergens responsible for attacks as much as possible. You will, therefore, have to eliminate dust, change your cat's litter very often by choosing a dust-free variety. If you smoke, do not do so in the presence of your cat and do not smoke in the house. You should go to your veterinarian immediately for respiratory support and an injection of corticosteroids and bronchial dilator as soon as possible. If the crisis is caught in time, everything will return to normal quickly. However, your cat will need to be monitored regularly and long-term treatment will be prescribed. When asthma is chronic, antibiotics are given only in cases of bacterial superinfection, which is very rare. Most often, corticosteroids and bronchodilators will become part of your cat's life. Asthma is not cured, but it is a disease that is well controlled.

Feline Borreliosis

Borreliosis is also known as Lyme disease. It is transmitted by ticks but is rare in cats.

Borreliosis or Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease that rarely affects cats. Symptoms may appear several months after the bite. Prevention remains the best solution to avoid this pathology.

Symptoms of borreliosis

WHAT IS BORRELIOSIS?

Lyme borreliosis or Lyme disease is a disease transmitted to cats by tick bites. It is an infectious disease that affects dogs more and can affect humans. There are different varieties of known ticks that can transmit borreliosis. The larva, nymph, or tick ingests the bacteria responsible for the disease when feeding on infected soil. When she clings to the cat, she risks transmitting the infection to it. This risk increases with time, but it is estimated that Lyme disease can rarely be transmitted within 24 to 48 hours. The tick is present all year round but especially in spring and summer. It is in bushes, grass, forests, parks, gardens...

SYMPTOMS OF LYME DISEASE

The cat is rarely affected by this disease and symptoms can occur two to three months after the tick bite. Your cat will have a high fever, decreased appetite and often general apathy. Two to three months after the tick bite, inflammation of the joints can form near the bite. There is a pain, stiffness in the limbs and joints. This inflammation can lead to paralysis. At the most advanced stage, borreliosis affects the kidneys, heart, and your cat's vital prognosis is engaged.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis can be difficult to make at the beginning of the disease, especially since this disease is exceptional in cats. Symptoms appear quite late. The diagnosis is based on serological tests or culture. A blood test will reveal borreliosis in addition to the symptoms described above.

Treatment of feline borreliosis

The treatment of borreliosis is mainly through prevention. It is known that cats are rarely affected by this disease, but at times when ticks are most present, it is advisable to examine your cat as soon as it returns from a walk. The transmission of bacteria is not immediate. By removing ticks before they are fixed or within a short period of time (24 hours), you further reduce the risk of transmission. However, if your cat is a carrier of borreliosis, antibiotic treatment will be necessary.
