American Shorthair

The American Shorthair is a cat known for its extreme kindness. Patient with children and rarely disturbed by dogs, they are among the ideal breeds of cats for family life.

The American Shorthair is considered to be a hardy, medium-sized cat with a strong musculature. It is very similar to the European or alley cat but is distinguished by its round head and short snout.

Origins of the American Shorthair cat

As its name suggests, the American Shorthair is an American cat. The first specimens arrived in the United States with the pilgrim fathers as early as the 16th century. They were, therefore, European cats, whose role was to hunt rodents.

Once settled in America, the breed evolved and gradually moved away from its origins. In view of their role in society, these cats were chosen and bred according to their hunting skills and their ability to withstand harsh winters.

The American Shorthair breed began to appear in breeding in the United States in 1900. Breeders want to keep their resemblance to alley cats but choose to cross with British Shorthair cats to give them a more elegant look.

The first cat officially recognized as an American Shorthair in 1904 was Buster Brown. At that time the breed was called Domestic Shorthair. The current name was officially chosen in 1966.

Today the American Shorthair is one of the most widespread and popular breeds in the United States and Canada. They are also very popular in Japan. In Europe, the American Shorthair remains one of the rarest breeds and some associations even refuse to acknowledge its existence.

Allure

The American Shorthair is a medium-sized cat with an athletic look due to its particular predisposition for hunting. His body is muscular and harmonious, of the semi-cobby medioligneous type, i. e. balanced but a little stocky.

The legs of the American Shorthair cat or kitten are of medium length and very muscular, like its body. The feet are round and the cat's tail is very common in length, thicker at the base and slightly thinner at the tip, as in many cat breeds.

The head is the distinctive sign of an American short-haired cat. It is of medium size and appears almost square in front. When the cat is in profile, it can be noticed that its snout is rather short and seems flattened. Their full cheeks give them a soft expression.

The cat's ears are placed high on the head, medium-sized, and with a rounded tip. The eyes of the American Shorthair cat are generally round and large and of a color that matches their coat, which can itself take on many colors or patterns.

Dress

As its name suggests, the American Shorthair is a short-haired cat. His coat is thick and dense, ideal to be protected from the bad weather without hanging dirt during a walk outside.

As for color, the American short-haired cat or kitten can have all hair colors except lilac, chocolate, fawn, and cinnamon. All patterns are also represented except for the color point (plain with spots of different colors on the hair of the legs, tail and snout). Only two-colored cats can have part of the white fur.

Many cats of this breed have a tabby pattern coat, i.e. with striped or spotted hair.

Character

Domesticated for many years, the American Shorthair breed is very popular with families in the United States or Japan thanks to its very affectionate character. It adapts as well to outdoor life as to the life of an apartment cat.

Very sociable and not very dominant with his masters, he gets along very well with children and dogs. However, given his hunting temperament, it is not advisable to bring him into contact with domestic rodents (rabbits, mice, rats, etc.).

Generally calm, he enjoys moments of tenderness with his family as well as moments of play. If he needs to exercise, like all cats, he can, however, be quite satisfied with the distractions he can see inside his home and generally does not suffer from not having access to a garden.

Health and care

The ancestors of the current American Shorthair were crossed to obtain cats resistant to cold and disease. This trait has been passed down from generation to generation and, combined with good genetic diversity in the species, most cats of this breed now have robust health.

There is no genetic disease specific to this breed. Routine vaccinations and care are sufficient. If the cat is neutered, then his diet should be monitored as he may have a slight tendency to obesity.

Maintenance

The short hair of the American Shorthair does not require any special maintenance. Simply brush it regularly to keep it soft and bright.
