American Bobtail cat
Woopets Cat Breeds American Bobtail
The American Bobtail is a fairly recent cat, especially known in the United States and still not very much in Europe. However, it is an adorable cat, very sweet and delicate with his master, sometimes glue-pot, which has a behavior close to that of the dog. It presents no health problems and its two varieties, short-haired and half-long, are hardly difficult to maintain.
Race history
The American Bobtail does not come down at all from the Japanese Bobtail. His story happens almost exclusively in the United States. At least, this is where we find its origin around 1965. In reality, the American Bobtail born of a "marriage" between a long-tailed cat and Yodi, a brown tabby cat discovered by John and Branda Sanders on an Indian reservation in Arizona. They decided to bring him home and to couple him and thus to mate with this female.
Several kittens from the same litter had a short tail. A friend of this couple, Mindy Shultz, has looked more seriously at this new breed, determined to have it recognized. This was the case in 1989 even though the breed is still under development.
Physical characteristics
His body:
The American Bobtail is of medium to large size. He is muscular, athletic and gives off an impression of power. It is the semi-cobby format. His body is longer than high. He has a full chest and strong hips. Males are usually stronger than females, who retain certain femininity.
His hair:
The American Bobtail comes in two varieties: a short-haired first and a long-haired second. Each time, the hair is shaggy and rather provided at the neck, tail, belly, and hindquarters. Tufts of hair are there at the legs for the longhaired variety. Seasonal variation is allowed in the mid-long-haired subject; it is noticeable in the short-haired subject.
Color:
The standard of the American Bobtail is not very difficult since it accepts all the colors in all possible formats in this cat.
His head:
It is wide, without any flat surface. His jaws, powerful, are visible. In profile, we see ahead with a slightly curved nose and a slight stop.
His eyes:
They are large, fairly broad, oval and angled to the base of the ear. The color is often matched with that of the dress, the most uniform possible.
His ears:
Thé ears of the American Bobtail are medium in size, broad at their base, well opened and placed low enough. A little rounded with plumes at their end.
Tail:
It is quite short since it measures between 2 and 10 cm. It never goes beyond the point of the hock.
Behavior and character
From a wild look, like the Lynx or Bengal, the American Bobtail is very gentle, highly devoted to his master and his adoptive family. He is quite a player, rather active and likes to hang out in the apartment or hang out from time to time on the family sofa. He loves the company of children. That of congeners and other animals does not bother him either. Note that it has a behavior closer to the dog, so it is often called a "cat-dog". Indeed, it can be sometimes glue-pot with its owner. He loves him and is ready for all sacrifices. He knows how to adapt to all environments and lifestyles. In any case, it does not support loneliness.
Living conditions
The American Bobtail does not have a great need for physical activity. Therefore, life in an apartment suits him perfectly, since the latter has a balcony so he can breathe outside air from time to time. Of course, he will have to have accessories like a cat tree or a scratching post, essential for his personal fulfillment. It is a calm cat who prefers to flam on a couch to go out running.
Health
The American Bobtail, in addition to being an excellent company, does not present any major concern for pathologies. He has no hereditary to our knowledge. He has a strong ability to resist disease. Nevertheless, it should be vaccinated against the usual pathologies of the cat that are likely to develop, namely rabies, typhus, leucosis and coryza.
To guard against these risks and to ensure your companion in case of health problems, Woopets advises you insurance for American Bobtail cat.
Hygiene
Due to a fairly dense undercoat, the American Bobtail requires regular maintenance but not complicated because a single weekly brushing is enough for his happiness. There is no need to do more, especially for the shorthair breed.
Except in times of molting, brushing should be done regularly but not with a pronounced relentlessness. You must be gentle in this exercise to preserve his coat and undercoat. It is possible to check the condition of his ears and eyes from time to time to avoid any risk of developing an infection.
